Concern has been sparked following revelations that workers from Donegal are losing tax benefits in Northern Ireland following changes introduced by the British government.
Sinn Fein Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, who has written to both the British and Irish governments, outlined his concern on Monday.
He said: “Over recent weeks, I have learned that with the introduction of the Universal Credit system by the British government, workers are now being asked to provide a postcode of residence within the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom to avail of tax credits.
“Of course, workers from Donegal can’t provide such information and have found themselves being denied these vital financial supports.
“I have made representations to the Minister for Social Protection and Employment Affairs, Regina Doherty asking that the Irish government seek an urgent resolution to this problem and my Sinn Féin colleagues Karen Mullan, MLA and Alex Maskey MLA have made similar representations to the British government.
“Workers from Donegal working in the six counties or in the North of Ireland are denied access to supports like Family Income Supplement in the 26 counties because they are working in another tax jurisdiction,” he added.
“This is bad enough but to also deny them tax benefits like any other worker in that jurisdiction is just plain discrimination and it has to be resolved and stopped as soon possible.”
