Gardaí in Donegal are warning the public to be vigilant for a scam email which claims to be from a sinister hacker.
In the email, the ‘hacker’ claims to have access to a person’s computer and has recordings of them in a compromising position.
The ‘hacker’ threatens to share the videos if the receiver does not transfer money to an online Bitcoin address.
Gardaí are urging the public to simply delete such emails. They confirmed that a local person was targetted recently and this type of scam is “quite common and is very threatening in nature.”
The Garda notice said: “If you should receive an email such as this….simply delete it! Do not ever send money to these people. If you receive a similar email and it is causing you worry then please talk to someone you trust.”
