Listen: Brendan Boyce driven by desire to bring Olympic medal to Donegal

written by Chris McNulty February 1, 2020

BRENDAN Boyce says he is motivated and driven by the thought of bringing an Olympic medal back to Donegal.

The Finn Valley AC man – who was last night named as the 2019 Donegal Sports Person of the Year – has booked his place at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Picture: Brendan Boyce with special guest Rob Heffernan (who is also his coach) and former Irish Athletics Team Manager Patsy McGonagle.

Boyce will be at his third Olympics having competed in London 2012 and Rio 2016. Following a sixth place finish at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, the Milford native is aiming high.

“The last year proves that I’m on the right track and I’ll definitely be going to Tokyo to challenge for a medal,” Boyce told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“The biggest thing in my head is to bring something like that back to Donegal because it’s never been achieved before. To break that barrier is a real motivation and it inspires me to get everything right.

“I’m very proud to be from Donegal and challenging on the world stage.”

Boyce succeeded fellow Finn Valley athlete Sommer Lecky as the overall winner at the Donegal Sports Star Awards.

He said: “To finally get Donegal Sports Person of the Year is massive for me.

“Donegal is just so strong. There are so many achievements every year. Donegal is full of superstars. I have been knocking on the door for a few years so it’s nice to finally get it.”
