PPE now a top target for thieves, businesses warned

Gardaí in Donegal are warning business owners to keep all personal protection equipment safely stored due to its high value during the Covid-19 pandemic.

PPE such as masks, scrubs, faceguards and eye shields are now in such high demand that criminals are seeking to steal and sell them.

Frontline businesses that use PPE or have items in stock are being advised to lock it out of sight at nighttime or when the building is unoccupied.

PPE on display near doors and windows gives thieves an opportunity to ‘smash and grab’ such goods, Sergeant Eunan Walsh has warned.

Sgt Walsh also advised businesses to ensure that they are sourcing PPE from legitimate sources and taking care to avoid fraudsters.

He advised businesses and members of the public to remain vigilant: “If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.”
