THE LUCKY car winners from the Letterkenny Credit Union Members’ Draw collected the keys of their new motors this morning.

Two brand new Volkswagen Polo Comfortlines were won by Michael and Joan Kelly of Ballymaleel, Letterkenny and Sarah Doherty from Lyons Court, Letterkenny.

The winners were presented with the keys this morning at Connolly’s Volkswagen in Letterkenny.

The dynamic and eye-catching high-spec cars are worth €23,000 each.

“This is the first thing I’ve ever won,” Joan Kelly told Donegal Daily.

“A friend ran us to say that she thought that we had won.

“After we signed up for the draw, I didn’t think about it again. I completely forgot about it. When Gordon (Randles, CEO Letterkenny Credit Union) rang me I said: ‘Are you sure?’ It’s fantastic to win a prize like this.”

Joan and Michael had been cocooning during the recent lockdown. In March both contracted Covid-19 before making full recoveries and will now look forward to some road trips in their new Polo.

Sarah Doherty, originally from Portnablagh, was accompanied by her Liverpool-supporting sons Conor (9) and Kyle (6) as she took receipt of her new wheels.

“I couldn’t believe it, I’m just delighted,” Sarah, who works at Letterkenny University Hospital, said.

“Word filtered to me from my brother-in-law. It was just totally out of the blue and I never in a million years expected to win a prize like this.”

Conor and Kyle, meanwhile, were still beaming from Liverpool’s winning of the Premier League last week.

This is the 13th year of the Letterkenny Credit Union Members’ Draw. Peadar McGranaghan, the brand manager at Connolly’s Volkswagen, was on hand with Mick Garry, the chairperson of the Credit Union Members’ Draw committee, to perform the official handover of the keys this morning.
