ANN-MARIE McGlynn set a new Northern Ireland Women’s 10k record at the weekend.

The Letterkenny AC woman clocked 32 minutes and 43 seconds at the ChampionChip-sponsored event at the Down Royal Racecourse.

The 40-year-old returned from lockdown in style as she shaved a whopping 55 seconds off her previous best.

McGlynn’s new mark is eight seconds faster than the previous best by Banbridge woman Emma Mitchell in 2017.

“I stayed on the pace thanks to superb help from John Black,” McGlynn said after the race.

“At one stage, I had to work really hard against a wind and a few rises on the road. I had already run a record time in training and knew that with a race atmosphere and a goal in mind I could go faster.”

McGlynn is now coached by Derryman Colin Roberts and the Letterkenny AC athlete has designs on making it to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in the women’s marathon.
