ONE of President Michael D Higgins’ popular dogs, Síoda, has died.

The President’s two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Síoda and Bród, were a regular feature when President Higgins welcomed visiting leaders and guests to Áras an Uachtaráin.

A newsletter from the Áras, said: “Sadly we must report that Síoda has passed away after a short illness”.

Previously, the President spoke about his dogs: “The dogs are not merely ice-breakers, they’re also a great source of wisdom, and they must be protected from the stresses of the Anthropocene.”
