Community service for Letterkenny man on drugs charge

October 21, 2020

A LETTERKENNY man has been sentenced to 160 hours of community service after appearing in court on drugs charges.

Damien McGuigan, a 28-year-old from Windmill View, Letterkenny, was before Letterkenny District Court.

McGuigan was charged with possession of cannabis and also of possessing cannabis with the intent to sell or supply.

Judge Paul Kelly noted that a probation report made references to the accused’s view on the matter.

“The biggest issue here is that he continues to use drugs,” Judge Kelly said.

“He acknowledges his admission and highlights drugs laws in other countries.”

Judge Kelly said this suggested that there was a possible risk factor in terms of reoffending and he bore this in mind while considering the matter.

He told McGuigan: “Until such times as it is changed, that is the law and you’re obliged to comply.”

McGuigan was sentenced to 160 hours of community service in lieu of four months imprisonment for the possession with the intent to sell or supply charge and mark two possession charges into consideration.
