Listen: Strength in depth showing for Donegal hurlers – McCann

MICKEY McCann believes the hard work of hurling clubs in Donegal is really paying dividends now.

Donegal overcame Armagh in Letterkenny this afternoon to reach the semi-finals of the Nicky Rackard Cup.

Second-half goals by Kevin Kealy, Ronan McDermott and Conor O’Grady secured a 3-13 to 1-14 win over Armagh for a Donegal side that was minus Declan Coulter and lost in-form Davin Flynn at half-time.

“We have a lot of strength in depth,” McCann told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“We have a lot of options, compared to Donegal teams from before.

“it’s great to see these young boys stepping up. There are five or six clubs competing in Donegal now. That’s starting to pay off for the county team. We’re in a good enough place.”

The teams were level at 0-6 apiece at half-time but Donegal took control in the second half. McCann last week called for improvement after his side defeated Longford – and he got it.

He said: “Our forwards had a big turnaround from last week. They worked hard and turned them over a lot. That took a lot of pressure off our defence this week.

“That’s a decent Armagh team. They beat us earlier in the year. That was a great shift by our boys.”
