THERE have been 6,110 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Ireland this evening by health officials.
Fifty-two of today’s cases were in Donegal, where there have been 1,325 new infections within the last two weeks.
The public have been warned that scenario models are now raising the possibility of between 1,000 and 2,000 people being hospitalised with up to 400 people in intensive care by mid-January if numbers do not subside.
Nationally, six further Covid-19 related deaths were recorded while 6,110 new cases were confirmed.
In the Republic of Ireland, there have now been 2,265 deaths and 107,997 cases in the pandemic.
Of the cases notified today: 2,911 are men and 3,195 are women; 63 per cent are under 45 years of age; the median age is 36 years old.
As of 2pm today, 776 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 70 are in ICU. There have been 92 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.
As of 8pm on Sunday, there were 42 Covid-19 patients in Letterkenny University Hospital and a further three suspect Covid-19 cases were on site.
Four patients with Covid-19 are under critical care at LUH.
The latest figures from the HSE showed one critical care bed and 11 general beds available at the hospital.
Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “Leaders and organisations in communities across the country now need to support their colleagues, neighbours, family and friends to keep to the spirit of public health advice.
“We must restrict our movements, we have to limit the people we interact with outside of our households, if we are to suppress the virus and sustain our essential services.”
Earlier today, 12 further Covid-19 related deaths and 1,801 new cases were confirmed in Northern Ireland, where the death toll now stands at 1,366.
There have been 79,873 cases in the region since the outbreak and hospitals in the North are now at 99 per cent occupancy,
