GARDAÍ in Donegal will be increasing the number of checkpoints from tomorrow.
Officers in Donegal say they will be ‘redoubling’ their efforts with an increased number of high-visibility checkpoints as the fight against the spread of Covid-19 continues.
People undertaking non-essential journeys are liable for a fine of €100 and since being introduced, over 2,100 fines to date have been issued nationwide by Gardaí to people who left their homes without a reasonable excuse.
Gardaí in Donegal say that motorists can expect an increase in the number of checkpoints, particularly in the Letterkenny area, from tomorrow. People are advised that they can expect longer delays while making journeys.
New legal powers are set to allow Gardaí to turn back people from Northern Ireland making non-essential journeys across the border.
Legislation is also being formed to enable officers to impose fines on non-residents who are breaching Covid-19 restrictions in the Republic.
A Garda spokesperson said: “People are reminded that the 5km limit includes the distance travelled from their home to a location for exercise. In other words, you can’t travel more than 5km to a location to exercise.
“The public should also be aware that if a driver is found to be in breach of the non-essential travel regulations that not only can the driver be fined, but their adult passengers as well. This is also the case for adults in groups undertaking activities such as cycling or walking – every adult in such a group can be fined.
“An Garda Síochána continue to investigate potential breaches of public Health Regulations associated with funerals (currently maximum 10 mourners) and weddings (currently maximum 6 attendees at wedding reception).”
