Sheephaven SAC enjoy a dive to remember

Sheephaven SAC Notes:

Sheephaven SAC activities continued at quite a pace last week, with boat dives on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday along with snorkelling on Wednesday evening and Sunday morning.

Wednesday evening’s boat dive was from Portnablagh in excellent weather conditions that allowed the divers back onto their favourite dive sites.

As the dive was underway there was another big turnout of snorkellers in the water at Portnablagh pier, many of who have recently joined Sheephaven SAC.

The sea conditions on Saturday morning dictated the choice of dive sites, as the effects of the northerly winds on Friday pushed a big swell onto the Donegal coastline.

Consequently the boat dive was at Pan Rock in Mulroy Bay, where the divers got a 40 minute dive and there is a maximum depth of 30 metres if desired.

It was noticeable that there was a welcome return of Thornback Rays, who have been few in numbers in recent times.

Sunday morning’s boat dive was from Portnablagh pier out to the furthest tip of Horn Head, with the first order of business the successful retrieval of a jammed lobster pot at a depth of 30 metres.

In-water conditions were excellent, with a horizontal visibility of well over 10 metres and temperatures of 14 degrees Celsius through-out the water column.

However the ebbing Spring tide made for a challenging dive, as it quickly took the divers out past the Flag Rock on a wonderful drift dive.

For the Trainee in the dive party who completed their first 30m dive it was one to remember, as the dive progressed through a series of swim-throughs that along with the diverse marine life made the morning truly unique.

Finally Sheephaven conducted their second 50-50 Draw on Sunday morning, with the winners an Cailini Comhar Creidmheasa Gaoth Dobhair.

All the funds raised by the Sheephaven 50-50 Draw goes to help keep the clubs Search and Recovery Unit operational, as the opportunities for fund raising over the last year have been limited.

In particular the club air compressor is nearing the end of its operational life and needs to be replaced, so the current focus is getting sufficient funds together to replace it as soon as possible.

So we appeal to supporters of Sheephaven SAC to visit our Facebook page and follow the links to buy a ticket for the next 50-50 Draw: www.facebook.com/sheephavensubaquaclub/
