Driving course means man keeps licence after 140km/h offence

July 7, 2021

A MAN caught driving at approximately 140km/h has kept his licence after undergoing the Pro Social Driving Course.

Sean Doherty (21) from Harvest Meadows, Greysteel, was before Letterkenny District Court charged with dangerous driving on June 9, 2021 at Raymoghey, Manorcunningham.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the Court that a Detective Garda in an unmarked car detected Doherty’s driving at 12.15am.

The speed was not calibrated, he said, but he radioed ahead and officers from the traffic corps stopped the Audi A3 and arrested Doherty.

Solicitor Mr Patsy Gallagher said his client was a third year electrician who had secured work in Dublin.

“His licence is essential to him,” Mr Gallagher said.

“He took it upon himself to research the difficulties he could face. He went himself and he did the Pro Social Driving Course. He paid a €250 fee and completed the course.

Judge Sandra Murphy said Doherty’s actions fell ‘beyond the cusp of dangerous driving’.

“However, he has addressed it very well,” Judge Murphy said. “He did the course and he seems to have addressed what he’s doing.”

Judge Murphy fined Doherty €250, giving him three months to pay.
