Man caught traveling at double speed limit at 160kph

September 28, 2021

A young motorist was caught driving at TWICE the speed limit of 160kph in a 80kph zone in Buncrana.

Chair Doherty, aged 19, appeared before Buncrana District Court charged with dangerous driving.

The court was told that Garda Sgt Charlene Anderson was on duty at Ludden, Buncrana at 1.15am on May 2nd, 2021.

She witnessed Doherty traveling at “extremely high speed” in a red VW Passat traveling towards Buncrana.

He was eventually caught up in traffic on the Railway Road when he entered Buncrana and was apprehended by Gardai.

The court was told that it was late at night and there were very few pedestrians around.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Rory O’Brien, told the court that it was fortunate that nothing more serious happened and that his client had apologised to Gardai.

He added that it was a case of ‘young, foolish and immature driving.”

Judge Raymond Finnegan suggested that the case was one suited for Doherty to undertake the Pro Social Driving Course.

He ordered Doherty, of Cloncool Park in Buncrana, to pay €250 towards the cost of the course and adjourned the case until January 25th.

“I expect a glowing report (from the course),” remarked Judge Finnegan.
