A Letterkenny man who spat at a woman in a local post office has been fined €100.

Letterkenny District Court heard there had been history between Donal Kelly and the woman’s family.

Garda Sgt Jim Collins said Kelly, of Windmill View, Glencar, Letterkenny had been involved in an ongoing issue with the woman’s son.

The court was told by his solicitor Mr Frank Dorrian that appearing in court was a “huge trauma” for the 23 year old.

He said Kelly has issues with drugs but was trying to cope with these.

Mr Dorrian said his client’s family felt he needed to partake in a psychiatric assessment.

The accused was charged with using threatening and abusive language and assaulting the victim on March 6, 2019 at Glencar Post Office.

Passing sentence Judge Raymond Finnegan said it was simply not acceptable for anybody to spit at somebody else.

He noted that Kelly had no previous convictions at the time and fined him €100 o the assault charge.
