Storm Barra: Live updates from Donegal

Storm Barra has brought very strong and disruptive winds and heavy rain to Ireland today, with the strongest and most impactful winds expected across western areas today and tomorrow.

A status yellow rain warning is in effect for Donegal.


7.00am – ROADS

Donegal County Council warns that there is snow, hail (icy patches) and heavy rain across our roads this morning, please allow extra time if travelling.

There are reports of two HGVs blocking the road at Barnesmore Gap. Traffic moving very slowly.

Back of Errigal is very poor with icy conditions.

Road between Ardara and Letterkenny described as treacherous.

The back road from Letterkenny to Drumkeen (Corravaddy) is badly affected by snow.

8.20am – ELECTRICITY

A series of power outages reported across Donegal:

Fault in Glenties = Restored

Almost 15,000 properties affected by outage in Gweedore. (Estimated Restore Time: 10:45)

A further 1,300 without power in Ballyshannon. (Estimated Restore Time: 12:45 and 14:00)

86 affected in Stranorlar. (Estimated Restore Time: 12:30)

A number of areas in and around Creeslough are without power including local businesses and the local health centre.


8:30am – SCHOOLS

PCC Falcarragh will remain closed today due to the major power cut in the West Donegal area.

Scoil Chroine National School, Dungloe is also closed today.


10am – ORANGE WARNING

Donegal has been upgraded to an Orange Weather wind warning from tonight with gusts of up to 130kph to strike.

An alert message from Met Eireann comes into effect from 2am tomorrow morning for the entire county.

More than 14,000 people are without electricity in the Falcarragh area but supplies are expected to be restored shortly after 9am.

Pobalscoil Chloch Cheannfhaola will remain closed for today, however.
