The Donegal representative for the Irish Second Level Students Union has slammed the lack of consultation with locals schools over their reopening.
Donegal’s regional officer of the ISSU, Ellen Griffin, said the lack of teachers and student absenteeism must still be addressed.
She said “The main concern myself and the union have is that students were not consulted about the plan for the reopening of schools.
“The rushed reopening of schools after a long time period of uncertainty may pose risks to the students and teachers health as there was not enough time set for schools to properly prepare for the reopening.
“The shortages of teaching staff and student absenteeism must be properly addressed.
“As the voice of the second-level students of Ireland we are extremely disappointed that our views were not taken into consideration when taking the decision to fully reopen schools, rather than phasing in a reopening.
“In the end, we are the ones who will be in the educational environment at this current time, facing these risks.”
An estimated 8,000 teachers are currently off schools around the country because of Covid-related issues.
