The death has taken place of one of Letterkenny’s best known and much loved businessmen, John Dunne.

Late of Ashleigh Close, and formerly High Road, he passed away suddenly earlier today at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

For over four decades, Mr Dunne owned and ran a very successful grocery store on the High Road, where the Shangrila Restaurant is now situated.

A modest, kind and hugely popular man, he retired in the early 2000s.

John was the uncle of well-known local priest, Fr Paddy Dunne.

Born in Birr, County Offaly, Mr Dunne moved to Letterkenny in 1944 with his parents Patrick and Kathleen (nee Browne from Termon) and his five siblings.

He was educated at the local Boys School and later at St Eunan’s College.

Following his retirement, Mr Dunne led an active life and was a regular on the local golf circuit.

Predeceased by his daughter Niamh, his brothers Dennis (Illistrin), Paddy (Chicago) and sister Sr Mary (MMM).

John is survived by his wife Nora (nee Canning), daughters Nessa McGahey, Ailbhe and Eimear, his brothers Michael (Ellistrin) and Eddie (Glencar and Montenegro), sons in law Keith and Rob, grandsons Arlo and Oisin and a wide circle of extended family and friends.

John’s remains are reposing at his late residence – wake private to family, neighbours and friends.

Funeral from there on Tuesday morning for requiem Mass at 11am in St Eunan’s Cathedral, followed by burial in Conwal Cemetery.

Funeral Mass can be viewed on the church webcam https://www.churchservices.tv/letterkenny

Family flowers only, donations in lieu, if desired, to Hillcrest Nursing Home comfort fund, care of any family member.

For those of you who would like to leave a personal message of condolence, can do in the “condolences” on www.rip.ie or on Charlie McClafferty Funeral Directors Facebook page.
