Young Donegal goalkeeper Fintan Doherty was named on the bench yesterday for Derry City in their pre-season friendly against Drogheda United.
The game finished 1-1 with Keith Cowan making his first start for Drogheda as they took the lead on the half hour mark through Dean Williams. Derry levelled in the second half through a trialist.
Doherty, who came through the ranks at Bonagee United, was in the Republic of Ireland Under-17 squad for the Uefa European Championship Qualifiers in October.
Doherty will be keen to impress manager Ruaidhri Higgins when he gets his chance in a bid to fight his way into the squad, but faces tough competition with Nathan Gartside and new signing Brian Maher, who is the Ireland Under-21 ‘keeper.
