Donegal underage athletes enjoy another successful weekend

Donegal athletes enjoyed another successful weekend competing at the Irish Life Health Juvenile Championships in Tullamore.

Joseph Gillespie of Finn Valley AC was a triple medallist in the jumps events.

Gillespie was the winner of the U19 Long Jump with a best of 6.53m, adding to his Triple Jump win when he leaped out to 13.81m, while Gillespie also took bronze in the High Jump, clearing 1.80m.

Gillespie’s club mate Mark Wilkinson took gold in the U14 High Jump, clearing 1.58m, while Hannah Murray won silver in the 200m as she finished in a Personal Best time of 25.81s, with Laura Kelly of Ratoath AC winning in 25.74s.

Murray also took silver in the 400m with another PB of 57.55.

Blaine Lynch was also on the podium in the U17 Javelin, throwing 54.51m for silver, 30 centimetres off Leevale AC’s Andrew Scanlon’s winning throw, while Dean Leeper took silver in the U16 event throwing 50.13.

Lucy McGlynn of Tír Chonaill AC added to her growing medal collection with another gold in the U19 400m Hurdles, winning in a time of 1:02.34.

McGlynn also took silver the previous day in the 400m, finishing in 56.02.

Tír Chonaill had plenty of other medallists over the weekend, with Ethan Dewhirst winning silver in the U16 250m Hurdles with a time of 33.34.

Jamie Kennedy was also runner-up in the U16 Triple Jump, with a best of 11.91m enough for the silver medal.

And in the Shot Put, Alex Anderson won silver in the U18 event, throwing out to 13.19m, while Alannah Anderson was third in the U15, throwing a best of 10.53m

Cranford AC’s Oisin kelly won the U19 1500m in 4:03.39, while Caolan McFadden won the U16 event in 4:15.28.

Lifford-Strabane AC’s Gallen sisters were winners in their respective Hammer events, with Adrienne winning the U19 with a best of 50.02m, while Caoimhe won the U16 with a 52.07m throw.

Caoimhe was clear of teammate Muireann McBride who came second with a 43.00m best.

Adrienne also took bronze in the U19 discus, throwing 32.69m.

Cormac O’Donnell was a silver medallist in the U19 Boys Hammer as he threw 52.15m, while Ellie McCurdy took silver in the U18 Javelin, throwing 39.56.

Elsa Moore took silver in the U17 3000m as she finished in 10:09.08.

Meanwhile, two Letterkenny AC athletes medalled at the weekend, as Erin Friel took silver in the U15 Girls 100m (12.89s), while she took bronze in the 200m (26.09s).

Rohan McMenamin was the other success for the club, taking bronze in the U15 1500m, finishing in 4:21.59 in a tightly contested finish.

And for Olympian YAC, Aoife McGeehin took silver in the U14 Discus with a throw of 26.12m, while Sophie Parlour was third in the U18 200m in 26.09, just behind Hannah Murray.
