Termon won the newly named Donna Dunnion Boyle memorial cup via 25 metre fees against Glenfin after the two sides couldn’t be separated in extra-time.

Termon 0-14 Glenfin 1-11 (Termon won 5-3 on free-kick shootout)

By Charlie Collins

The teams couldn’t be separated in either normal or extra-time and it took a free kick shootout to win it for Termon.

The opening quarter proved to be a very cagey affair, perhaps much to do with the respect these two fierce rivals have for one another.

Karen Guthrie pointed early on and Geraldine McLaughlin replied in the 14th minute proving to the only scores of that period.

Yvonne Bonner restored Glenfin’s lead with a good score from play but McLaughlin replied quickly to level it up at 0-02 apiece after twenty minutes.

Geraldine McLaughlin then put Termon ahead for the first time with an excellent score from an acute angle but it was a short lived lead as Guthrie and Bonner combined to set up Caoimhe McGlynn to goal from close range , 1-02 to 0-03.

That lead didn’t last long either as McLaughlin scored two points in quick succession to level things up again at 1-02 to 0-05 in the 26th minute.

In the final minute of the half Geraldine made it six for herself and her team, again from play to leave it 0-06 to 1-02 in Termon’s favour at half-time.

Karen Guthrie’s free levelled it up again and there was an injury concern for Geraldine McLaughlin immediately after that as she was fouled and needed lengthy treatment.

Ciara McGarvey pointed the free to put Termon ahead but two quick fire Guthrie points restored the lead for Glenfin, 1-05 to 0-07.

The scores were coming more regularly now, Roisin McCafferty and Evonne Bonner exchanged points, 1-06 to 0-08 and it was anyones game going into the final quarter.

Glenfin squandered a few chances from both play and frees as they dominated the ball and helped keep Termon in the game. After a scoreless period, Evelyn McGinley hit a super point from 30 metres to level it up and then Geraldine McLaughlin got her 7th point from a free to put Termon ahead , 0-10 to 1-06.

Yvonne Bonner and Geraldine McLaughlin exchanged points from frees and then Bonner kicked another free and they were level again, 0-11 to 1-08. Into the final minute, McLaughlin had a difficult chance from a long range free but it faded wide and we were set for extra-time.

Karen Guthrie pointed early on and then six minutes in Sharon Conaghan denied Geraldine McLaughlin what looked a certain goal with a brilliant point-blank save.

Yvonne Bonner pointed a free to make it a two point game and Karen Guthrie’s successfully free ended the first period of extra-time with Glenfin three in front, 1-11 to 0-11 points.

Termon pushed hard at the start of the final period and two McLaughlin points left just a point between them and then when she was fouled Geraldine kicked the equaliser to make it 1-11 to 0-14, a brilliant comeback by Termon to send us to a free-kick shoot-out.

A great game between two super teams would be decided by a historic shoot-out for a Ladies Senior final in Donegal and it was Termon who prevailed in that shootout, 5-3 to take the title.
