A search was launched around the Inishowen coast today following reports of a flare sighting.
A distress flare, now believed to be a false alarm, was reported near Culdaff bay at 12.40pm this afternoon.
Malin Head Coast Guard tasked Lough Swilly RNLI, Greencastle Coast Guard and the Rescue 118 helicopter to search the water for any possible vessels in difficulty.
After an extensive search of the area, all search and rescue units were stood down.
The Lough Swilly RNLI confirmed that their volunteer crew returned to Buncana pier to refuel and make ready to return to service.
A spokesperson issued this public notice: “Remember, if you’re in difficulty in or on the water or see someone in trouble, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
