An ultramodern home in Donegal has scooped a Sustainability Award from the Northern Ireland Federation of Master Builders.
The four-bedroom family home overlooking Donegal Bay boasts top-of-the-range energy efficiency, with utility bills estimated at €1,200 per year.
Tyrone-based Moffitt & Robinson Construction Ltd. is the proud firm behind the new build.
The house was constructed using a timber frame clad in aluminium and corrugated Cambrit fibre-cement – a material the builders had never seen used for anything but roofing.
The judges said the house was a “great example of a modern build, built to meet environmental and sustainability requirements”, adding that Moffitt & Robinson’s “bespoke finishes lend a unique style.”
It is designed to meet “Passive House standard” – the highest in the world for energy efficiency – but the builders actually managed to exceed it. The homeowners can now enjoy the view of the Bay from their picture windows while paying barely £1,000 a year for all their utility bills, with LED lighting and air source heat pumps ensuring the new build’s carbon footprint is miniscule.

The Federation of Master Builders’s 2023 Northern Ireland Master Builder Awards were held at the Malone Hotel in Belfast on Friday 30 June.
The awards recognise excellence in Northern Ireland’s small and medium-sized construction companies and are run by FMB, the largest trade association in the UK construction sector.
