Donegal family giving back to charities in gratitude for baby boy’s care

A Burtonport family has been inspired to give back to charity to give thanks for the support they received during their baby’s first year.

Little Jamie McBride will turn one this September. He is the son of Helena Boyle from Burtonport and Pearse McBride from Fanad.

Despite his difficult start to life, he’s full of smiles and his personality is shining through.

Jamie was born at Letterkenny University Hospital in September 2022. Immediately after his birth, he struggled with his breathing. He was rushed to Temple Street Childrens Hospital the following day, where he was diagnosed with Pierre Robin Syndrome.

Pierre Robin Syndrome is a rare condition that affects a baby’s lower jaw, causing difficulties in breathing and feeding.

Jamie spent the first 27 weeks of his life in Temple Street Hospital. His parents described the care he received as “second to none”. Jamie spent his first night at home in April 2023.

Helena and Pearse gained crucial support from five charities during Jamie’s weeks in hospital, so much so that they want to give back. They have organised two charity events this October to support the Children’s Health Foundation Temple Street, Donegal Cancer Flights & Services, Bumbleance, Blood Bikes Northwest and Little Blue Heroes.

“We were so grateful for their support. We now would like to fundraise for the charities that helped us along our journey, so that they can continue to help families of children in hospital for prolonged periods of time,” they said.

Firstly, on Saturday 14th October they are having a Mammies Market. Donations of new and good quality secondhand baby and children’s items (toys, clothes, and baby equipment) are being accepted for the community sale. The second event on Sunday 15th October will be a vintage style tea party.

All are welcome to the events, with details to be confirmed closer to the time.
