Eco-conscious postal workers in Donegal have received praise for closing a postbox to protect a bird and its chicks.
The box, located in Devlinmore Carrigart, had a sign on it for four weeks informing residents that it was out of service due to the nesting bird’s presence. The letter is signed by Paul Herrity, Delivery Service Manager with An Post in Letterkenny.
“This post man should get a thank you,” said a local resident who admired his actions to respect the bird’s new habitat.
It comes at a time when the number of suitable nest sites are falling in Ireland due to building renovations and the construction of modern buildings without suitable cavities for birds.
