Gardaí have reminded e-scooter users and cyclists that it is illegal to ride on footpaths.
The call comes after an incident in Letterkenny last week when a pensioner was knocked down and injured after being struck by an e-scooter.
Out of the 105 people killed on Irish roads so far this year, two were e-scooter riders.
Donegal Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Paul Wallace, said new legislation is currently being drawn up and should be publicised at the end of the month.
E-scooters will come under a new class of vehicle – Personal Powered Transporters (PPTs).
“Currently, e-scooters are not legal to use on public roads,” Sgt Wallace said.
“The new regulations will classify e-scooters as PPT’s wherein technical details will be specified for example power, speed and weight values along with technical and usage requirements.”
The current position, he clarified, is that it is illegal to use e-scooters on public roads. He also stressed that it is illegal to use e-scooters and bicycles on footpaths.
“I suppose there’s a clue in the name – a footpath is for walking on and not for e-scooters or bicycles,” he concluded.
