Fanad Head Lighthouse is set for a major redevelopment after planning permission was granted for a new visitor centre.
The popular tourist attraction has been given the green light for a new multi-use visitor experience centre, car park and children’s nature-based play area.
The works will involve the partial demolition of the existing ticket office and shop.
In the application by Údarás Na Gaeltachta, the Forbairt Fhánada CTR social enterprise reports that they have seriously outgrown their current facilities to the point that they are unable to meet the expectations of visitors. No indoor cafe, meeting space, storage and restroom facilities etc. are some of the issues encountered.
Twenty-two new car parking spaces, 3 minibus/RV spaces, a bus drop-off area, an external seating area, and a children’s play area are included in the development.
The existing wastewater treatment system will also be upgraded.
