A Letterkenny councillor has raised serious safety concerns about two junctions on the N13 Letterkenny-Stranorlar road.
Cllr Donal Coyle brought motorists’ concerns before the Letterkenny-Milford MD this week, saying that the layout of the junctions to the Cullion Road and Listillion Roads are accidents waiting to happen.
Cllr Coyle commented that there are dangers for traffic coming onto the busy N13 from the Dry Arch Roundabout, turning right to the Cullion Road, and those coming down Lurgybrack hill.
He explained: “Anybody driving to the Cullion, they are sitting in a box between the two lanes. If there is a car coming from Drumkeen turning left into Cullion, what is happening is cars are overtaking while that car turning is slowing down. Sooner or later there is going to be a head-on collision there.”
“People have contacted me about the number of times they have been nearly hit by cars while they are sitting waiting,” Cllr Coyle told Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny Milford Municipal District.
He suggested that a traffic island could be considered to prevent overtaking at the Cullion Road junction, while a slip lane could facilitate traffic turning off at Listillion.
“I would ask that something be done before there’s a serious accident,” Cllr Coyle said, acknowledging that the N13 is a national primary road maintained by the TII.
David McIlwaine, Area Manager, Roads & Transportation confirmed that the safety concerns will be referred to the Donegal County Council’s Road Safety Engineer for review.
Works were carried out to improve the signage and road markings at the Listillion Road junction in 2022.
