A once-controversial film about the ‘Screamers’ of Donegal will be screened at a Donegal-focused film club in Clonmany this week.
In 1979, The Family documentary revealed life inside the Atlantis Commune of Screamers at Burtonport.
The documentary was made for RTE, but deemed too disturbing for television viewers and not broadcast until 10 years after its completion. The Screamers, led by English woman Jenny James, practised Reichian methods of extreme emotional self-expression.
This short film is part of an eclectic programme of films in the line-up of the ‘Destination Donegal’ film club on November 11th at Market House, Clonmany (from 2pm).
Disappear Here have partnered with the prestigious national film archives at the Irish Film Institute (IFI) to present films made in and about Donegal from the 1950s to the 1980s.
This bespoke programme includes professional and amateur film documenting many aspects of Donegal life through promotional travelogues capturing the beauty of the landscape for prospective visitors; through Gael Linn’s Amharc Éireanncinema newsreel; and through amateur films capturing community life in years gone by.
