McGuinness: ‘A number of the boys were on to me to come back and were very persistent’

Donegal manager Jim McGuinness has revealed a number of key players came to him to consider making a return to the county fold.

The Glenties man admitted that the downturn in form last season sparked internal strike which resulted in him returning for a second term.

McGuinness told Donegal Daily’s Charlie Collins that certain players were very “persistent” in trying to get him back on board!

He said “If things were going well and even if it was a decent season last year I probably wouldn’t be back. That’s the truth of the matter.

“A number of the boys got on to me and kept getting onto me and were very persistent. I’m here now and I suppose we can push on now and have a positive season or two.”

McGuinness said he is really looking forward to the challenge but despite a lot of local talent he is under no illusion about the size of the task ahead of him.

He said “Personally, I always feel there is good talent in Donegal and it’s just a matter of getting them together and getting them fit obviously and putting them through a game-plan and a structure and that’s what we’re going to try and do now.

“We know were we are and we know where we want to try and get to.

“There’s a lot of very good teams in Division Two and it’s a very competitive division so that’s going to be a very big challenge for us but one that we have to look forward to over the next number of months.”
