There is sadness in the seaside town of Dunfanaghy and in the wider golfing community following the death of James Brogan.
Affectionately known as ‘Wee James’, Mr Brogan from Old Cottage Road, passed away at Letterkenny University Hospital.
He will be deeply missed by by his sister Mary Gillespie, brother Hughie, brother-in-law Paddy, sister-in-law Jean, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and extended family and friends.
Dunfanaghy Golf Club paid a touching tribute to James who was an integral part of the club for many decades.
A club spokesperson paid the following emotional tribute to James.

“This is a very very sad day for our club as I announce the death of a man who was the face of Dunfanaghy Golf Club for decades. James Brogan affectionately known to us all as ‘Wee James’. Our thoughts and prayers are with James’s sister Mary his brother Hugh both of whom were members of the club and their families at this very sad time.
“James was a master of the game of golf. He may have been small in stature, but his achievements were huge. At the centenary year in 2006 he had already won the Captain’s Prize 8 times as well as the President’s Prize. He also won the Captain’s Prize in Rosapenna and Cloughaneely and the President’s Day Prize in Portsalon. He won 3 senior scratch cups in Dunfanaghy and 2 intermediate scratch cups in Portsalon. I could go on and on mentioning the achievements James had in Golf.
“James was Captain of the club in 1972 and President in the centenary year 2006 and 2007. He served on many committees down through the years. He worked tirelessly for the club and was committed to every role he took on.
“He will be sorely missed by us all especially his good friend of many years Roger Green. They were like a double act. My first two customers every morning in life for years and years. If James didn’t appear there was something wrong as he never missed a day until sadly his health started to fail.
“We will never see the likes of him again. James’s remains are reposing at his late residence in Dunfanaghy form 6pm this evening. His funeral mass takes place in Dunfanaghy on Friday at 11am with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. May God hold you in the palm of his hand James. Life at Dunfanaghy Golf Club will not be the same without you. Rest in peace.”
His remains will be reposing at his late residence from 6.00 pm this evening, Wednesday, 3rd January 2024. Funeral Mass in Holy Cross Church, Dunfanaghy, on Friday, 5th January 2024, at 11.00 a.m.
