Donegal folk/singer-songwriting duo, Without Willow, today release their stunning new single ‘Lay Down Your Troubles’.

It precedes their eagerly anticipated debut album, Left Behind, which is scheduled for release on February 9th, accompanied by a launch gig at the Regional Cultural Centre (RCC) in Letterkenny on the same day.

Karen Kelly and Simon McCafferty make up Without Willow and are already making waves in the music scene.

Poignantly, the new single features the late, great Ted Ponsonby from Letterkenny, whose distinctive dobro playing leaves an indelible mark on their music. Tragically, Ted passed away suddenly in September 2023, never having the opportunity to hear the finished song, although he had also contributed to Without Willow’s first EP released in 2017.

The late, great, Ted Ponsonby.

The band has opened for renowned artists such as Mick Flannery, Moya Brennan, and Declan O’Rourke. Their 2019 and 2022 sold-out headline shows in Germany and Canada showcased the duo’s exceptional talent and global appeal.

Karen, a former nurse, contributes haunting, heartfelt vocals that intertwine seamlessly with Simon’s artistic vision. Simon, a graphic design student and virtuoso guitar player, infuses passion and skill into emotive melodies, creating a sound as diverse as their backgrounds. The pair’s synergy produces a poignant exploration of the human experience.

Their upcoming single, Lay Down Your Troubles, is a beautiful ballad offering Karen’s lyrical narratives of resilience and vulnerability. The single features an incredible ensemble of musicians, including skilled drummer Mark McGirr, the multitalented Orri McBrearty on bass guitar and organ, and the aforementioned late, great Ted Ponsonby.

Without Willow is scheduled to perform at the Your Roots are Showing Folk conference in Dundalk on January 18th. This will be followed by a much-anticipated album launch gig at the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, on February 9th. Tickets for the album launch are on sale now, promising an unforgettable experience with the dynamic duo. Don’t miss the chance to witness Without Willow‘s enrapturing performance as they share their heartfelt music and unforgettable stories with audiences worldwide.
