Call for speed limit reduction at accident blackspot on N14

A Donegal County Councillor has called for the speed limit to be reduced at an accident blackspot on the N14 Manor-Lifford road.

Three people have lost their lives in recent years on the short stretch of road at Carrickballydoey.

Talented Ramelton musician Paul Mooney, aged in his 30s, was the latest person to die on this road following a crash before Christmas.

“It’s time now that something is done before there are any more deaths,” Cllr Donal Coyle told this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Cllr Coyle said the 100km/hr speed limit is not fit for purpose on this stretch of road which has a series of bends.

He added that residents at Carrickballydooey “are living in fear for their lives” with the speed of passing traffic.

“The speed needs to be reduced to at least 80km/hr from Carrickballydoey to Mondooey,” Cllr Coyle said, pointing out that other national primary roads in the country have had their speed limits reduced with no issues.

He asked the council to make urgent contact with Transport Infrastructure to improve safety measures.

A council spokesperson said “the issue will be referred to the Road Safety Engineer for review. They will report back on the need and scope of a potential HD17 (Road Safety Inspection), then all options will be considered to deal with the specific safety concern identified.”
