Cockhill Celtic progressed to the Round of 16 of the FAI Junior Cup this afternoon with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Askeaton Kilcornan of the Limerick Desmond League. Cockhill started the match on top with Adam McLaughlin forcing the visiting keeper Killian Fitzgerald into a fine low save in the opening minutes. Cockhill opened the scoring on 10 minutes when Brendan McLaughlin’s right wing corner was met by Garbhan Friel’s powerful header to the top corner from eight yards .Friel spurned an opportunity to double the lead midway through the half when his penalty, awarded after Adam McLaughlin was fouled, rebounded off the crossbar.The away team then had a foray forward and won a free kick on the right. When the free kick was headed to the edge of the box, Raymond Kelly’s shot flew over.Fitzgerald was called on to make another save to deny Friel to leave the home side one ahead at the break. Despite playing against the wind, the home side dominated proceedings in the second half. Adam McLaughlin’s header from a Peter Doherty cross doubled their lead and eased any nerves, allowing Cockhill to enjoy the last half hour. A right wing free kick found it’s way to the far post where Jason Breslin’s volley was deflected wide but Breslin was not to be denied and his looping header from the resulting corner found the net on 67minutes. Substitute Corey McBride looked sharp in the inside right position and when Fitzgerald parried his goalbound shot, Liam Grant was on hand to slot home the fourth They completed the scoring in the final minute when McBride showed great close control on the left and his precise cross was headed home by Luke Rudden. The visitors had the last effort of the game when Kelly’s powerfully struck free kick was well dealt with by Harry Doherty.

Playing against the wind the home side started well with Kamie McDaid shooting just wide before the same player fed Shaunie Bradley who fired over the bar. The visitors then took a shock lead after Sanchez fired a brilliant free kick to the top corner giving Taylor Clarke no chance. Clarke kept his side in the contest minutes later denying Mia from close range after a defensive mix up.Buncrana upped the tempo and when a Kieran McDaid free fell to Jamie McDaid his effort was blocked and Michael McLaughlin’s follow up was also brilliantly blocked by a defender.The home sides best chance came after a Calvin Gallagher free kick found the unmarked Kevin O’Loughlin who headed over from five yards. The home side dominated the second half and on the hour a quickly taken free from Kieran McDaid almost caught out keeper Dituto. They got back on terms when McDaids cross saw Bradley challenge the keeper and when the ball broke Eoin Murphy was on hand to slot home. The Hearts then took the lead in the 86th minute after an Adam Curran cross came off a defender pas the stranded keeper for an own goal. Buncrana then sealed the tie after a Kieran McDaid corner was poked home by Bradley from point blank range to send the home side into the last sixteen.

Clonmany started well with a Matthew Brennan cross finding Jamie Coyle whose header was cleared off the line by Keith McColgan. At the other end a Michael McElroy effort was turned around the post by Killian McCarron in the home goal.Midway through the half by the home sides Matthew McLaughlin saw him pull the ball back but Jason Devlin blasted over from eight yards. Coyle then had a shot well saved by Dylan Porter on 34 minutes. Aileach took the lead five minutes later when David Healy rose unmarked to head to the net following a corner. But the home side got back on terms on the stroke of half time after Devlin was upended in the area and Oisin Hession sent Porter the wrong way from the spot. Clonmany with the elements were on top in the second half and Devlin cut in from the left which was smothered by Porter . They took the lead on 51 minutes with a looping Conor Doherty effort to the roof of the net. Aileach had a chance to level things when Gavin Doherty burst through the home defence but McCarron advanced to smother at his feet. Clonmany sealed the points when substitute Aaron Porter and Jake Harkin combined for Porter to feed Devlin and he finished low past Porter.

In a brisk opening to the game the home side had a chance in the opening minute with a Stephen Doherty effort saved by Matthew Whoriskey. At the other end Dylan Doogan went close for the visitors with a shot which just cleared the bar. On 12 minutes David McGeady in the home goal made a superb save to deny Cody Brogan. Midway through the half Aileach broke the deadlock after Doherty played a neat one two with Caoimhin Lavery before shooting low past Whoriskey. Damien Barr then advanced from the back to find Doherty but he shot straight at Whoriskey. In the 33rd minute the home side made it two nil when Josh Boyle found Doherty inside the area and he finished well to the corner. The second half was a scrappy affair with the home defence absorbing a lot of pressure with Brogan and Anthony Gallagher very prominent for the visitors. Brogan had a good effort turned away by Mc Geady but they found it hard to create clear chances. Aileach then broke away in the final minute with Ryan Long bursting out of defence before finding Doherty who chipped the advancing Whoriskey and complete his hat trick.

In wintry conditions on a good surface the home side started well with a Keith Norris cross sidefooted over the bar from eight yards by Brendan Mclaughlin. Poor defending then by the home side saw Daniel McMenamin latch onto a ball over the top and lay the ball off to Oisin Hillen who composed himself well to drill low past Patrick McLaughlin. Culdaff equalised midway through the half after Mclaughlin charged down an attempted clearance by keeper Conor O’Neill and the ball flew into the net. The home side took the lead then on the half hour after Jack O’Brien curled a brilliant wind assisted free kick to the top corner from over thirty yards out . The visitors replied and a whipped in corner from Aaron Scott was palmed away at the near post by Patrick Mclaughlin. Culdaff responded and Jamie McLaughlin headed O’Briens corner wide before the home side went three one up. A searching ball over the top from Ben Curley was controlled by O’Brien whose attempted lob stopped on the line but he followed up to score. They made it four one before the break when an Aiden Cunningham free kick was met by a superb diving header from Michael Coyle. Culdaff continued in the ascendancy after the break and increased their lead when O’Brien completed his hat trick sidefooting Cunning hams corner to the net from ten yards. The Point kept trying and a dangerous cross from substitute Seamus McFadden to Hillen who headed narrowly wide at the back post. But Culdaff were rampant at this stage and Brendan Mclaughlin capitalised on a poor clearance to finish emphatically and make it six one. They completed the scoring late on after O’Brien squared for Brendan McLaughlin to fire in off the post and also complete a hat trick.

The visitors had the first chance after an Oran Fallon effort clipped the outside of the post. The home side responded and a Kyle Cooke cross just eluded the inrushing Keelan Doherty. The visitors then took the lead on the half hour after Oisin McKelvey evaded a few challenges and when the ball broke back to him he fired low past Sam Coyle to the far corner. Before the break they had another chance when Aiden Boyle lifted the ball over a defender and advanced clear but was denied by the legs of Coyle. With the wind Keadue dominated the second half and increased their lead when Aiden McHughs powerful effort was beaten away by Coyle but McHugh pounced to drill home the rebound. They added a third on the hour mark when Oisin McHugh laid the ball off to name sake Aiden inside the area and he guided the ball low past Coyle into the corner. They their fourth after a fine diagonal ball by Aiden Boyle into the path of Paddy O’ Donnell . Rashenny then got a late consolation when Shane Wards cross was slotted home from eight yards by Kaylum Long.
Cockhill Colts 3
Dunree United 4
There were few chances in the first half as the home side led one nil at the break. The goal came mid way through the half after a Declan Kearney free kick was met by a glancing Karl Kelly header which nestled in the corner. In comparison the second half was all action and Dunree levelled when Bernie Doherty got on the end of a left wing cross to slot past Graham Doherty from seven yards. Dunree took the lead then on the hour mark after mark Doherty fed Bernie Doherty to convert from close range. They went further ahead midway through the half after Graham Doherty parried a Tommy Mulhern effort and Bernie Doherty was first to react to slot home and complete his hat trick. But Cockhill responded and got a goal back from the penalty spot with Joe Doherty converting after he had been fouled. But Dunree reopened a two goal cushion when Bernie Doherty latched onto a ball over the top and finished well to complete a four goal haul. Cockhill were not finished yet and got a late consolation when Jude O Donnell fired a free kick from the edge of the area to the bottom corner but Dunree held out to advance.
Greencastle Youths 1

In very wet conditions at chapel Lane it was Greencastle who were enjoying the better of the ball early on with a few corners without challenging Culdaff. Greencastle had a great chance to go one up when Benny McClenaghan was upended penalty in the box. Dan Rowan stepped up but hit a very tame shot down the middle for an easy save for the goalkeeper Ruairi McLaughlin. As the half wore on Greencastle enjoyed the possession with Culdaff defending well.Just on the stroke of half time Conor Gillen went on a mazy run in the box and eventually was brought down for a second penalty. Conor Gillen dusted himself down and slotted it in the bottom corner.As the second half wore on the rain continued to pour and conditions were heavy going. Both teams were working hard in a midfield battle. Culdaff started to push more men forward in an effort to get an equaliser but the Greencastle defence held strong to proceed to the next round.

Cockhill Youths 1 (Cockhill Yths win 5-3 on pens)
In blustery conditions in St Patrick’s Park it was Cockhill with the wind behind them who got off to a dream start. An in swinging corner after 2 minutes caused confusion in the Carn box and was bundled in by Paul Mullen. After this Carn began to settle without really troubling the Cockhill goalkeeper Darragh O’Donnell. With the wind causing havoc Cockhill looked to capitalise but the Carn defence stood firm for the most part. The second half saw Carn have the wind behind them and they started quickly. A Dayton Cooke effort flashed wide of the Cockhill net. With Carn pushing men forward Cockhill looked to catch Carn on the counter and they nearly did on 61 minutes when a low cross from the left went all the way to the back post where Ryan McDaid struck his effort off the outside of the post from a tight angle. Carn thought they had themselves level when a Dayton Cooke free kick was spilled by Cockhill keeper O’Donnell before he clawed the ball into the arms when it looked close to crossing the line. Carn continued to push and looked dangerous from corners but Cockhill defended well with Ryan Downey and Mason McDaid winning crucial headers and blocks throughout the second half. With just six minutes to go Carn got themselves level thanks to an unlikely scorer. The ball was passed back to Carn keeper Kyle Harkin who from the edge of his own box, drove the ball towards the Cockhill defence. The ball evaded the defenders and took a bounce in front of O’Donnell and flew into the net to make it one each. That would be the last significant action before the game went to extra time. In extra time both sides looked tired and leggy but both defences stood firm to cancel each other out meaning the game would head to penalties. Cockhill keeper O’Donnell was the hero for his side as he saved Carns fourth penalty before Cockhill dispatched their fifth to win 5-3 in the shootout.

Gleneely Colts 3
The home side began well enjoying alot of possession but failing to trouble Ciaran Gallagher in the Colts goal. Gleneely then got a grip and took the lead in the 22nd minute after Paul Doherty crossed for the left for Tristan McColgan to fire low past Michael Mclaughlin from twelve yards. Glengad responded before the break with PJ McDaid feeding Caolan McColgan at the back post but his first time effort was turned round the post by Gallagher. Gleneely got off to the perfect start to the second half when Shane Diver collected possession and evaded a tackle before slotting past the advancing McLaughlin. Glengad kept pressing and when McColgan crossed Stephen Dohertys header was palmed away by Gallagher. They did get a goal back on the hour mark after a quick free from Doherty found McColgan whose shot took a deflection on its way past Gallagher. But Gleneely sealed the points on the break when Shay Harkin found Matthew Doherty to slot past McLaughlin.

Aileach Youths 1
Cockhill Res 5
Cockhill proved too strong for Aileach Youths in testing conditions. Cockhill started the brighter with Ethan O’Toole and Niall Breslin lively. Aileach came more into the game on the half hour and had a couple of efforts from Kelan Doherty drift wide of Lee McColgans post. Cockhill took the lead on 40 minutes when a long punt up the field by McColgan skidded off the wet surface past the Aileach defence and Breslin raced clear then cut inside an Aileach defender before slotting the ball past Dylan Clarke in the Aileach goal.
The second half started with Aileach having more of the play but Cockhill broke to devastating effect on 50 minutes when O’Toole found his strike partner Breslin who outpaced the Aileach defence and fired into the bottom corner. On the hour, a Cockhill break found Breslin who dinked the ball over the unrushing Clarke from 15 yards to complete his hat trick. Aileach refused to lie down and got a goal back with 15 minutes to go when Ciaran Bradley fired a free kick into the bottom corner from 25 yards. Aileach pressed to get back into the game and again Cockhill punished them when the game was stretched when O’Toole shot home from the edge of the box. Cockhill wrapped the scoring with a couple of minutes left when a free kick from wide of the box by Tiarnan Moran deceived Clarke and ended in the net.

In heavy conditions the Point started well and were unlucky when a a shot from Sean Og Gallagher from twenty yards hit the bar and went over they took the lead midway through the half when a pass from Simon Wallace sent O Gallagher Gallagher through and he went round the keeper Oisin Quigley to score from six yards .They almost added a second after a shot from Simon Wallace was turned round the post by Quigley. Redcastle got a foothold in the match after that and a shot from Donnelly was well saved by Stephen Slattery in the Point net . Redcastle got an equaliser on the stroke of half time when Donelly ‘s free kick deceived Slattery and landed in the net .With conditions getting worse chances were few and far between in the second half but it was Redcastle who got in front on the hour when a cross from the right by Caolan Henry was dispatched into the net by Gary Kelly from 12 yards. The Point were unlucky after 80 minutes when a shot from 20 yards by Brian Mc Colgan was brilliantly saved by Quigley low down to his right. The game was played out after that with no more chances at either end.

Illies Res 3
Moville started well and an early Conor Farren effort was well gathered by Conor Doherty. At the other end Oran Dohertys snap shot was well saved by Ryan Coyle. Illies then had a good spell with Mickey Grant denied by Coyle and Oran Doherty firing a free kick just past the post before JP McKenna but again Coyle was equal to it. Moville lifted the pressure and an Evan Hudner free was saved by Doherty. But Illies made the break through on 39 minutes when Shane Devlin turned well on the edge of the area before slotting low to the corner. Moville started the second half well and eventually equalised on 68 minutes when Conor Farren released Marcus Rule to advance and fire to the roof of the net. They took the lead on 75 minutes after Daniel McFadden unleashed a free kick to the top corner. But Illies responded and got back on terms when Oran Doherty broke clear of the homer defence and slotted past Coyle. In the final minute Illies snatched a crucial winner after Mckenna s cross found Oran Doherty to fire home from eight yards.

Carrowmena FC 3
In rainy conditions the home side had the first chance but a Patrick Doherty effort was well saved by Michael Noone in the visitors goal at the second attempt. Carrowmena responded but Ciaran Bonner fired wide when well placed. Before the break the home side went close again after good play from Daniel Downey found Davids O Hagan who fired just over. Dunree then took the lead on the stroke of half time after James Quin released Doherty who finished low to the corner. Dunree created the first chance of the second half also with Quinn flicking the ball on for O Hagan who was denied by Noone. The home side doubled their lead then on the hour mark after Quinn sent Doherty clear to dink the ball superbly over the keeper and into the net.Carrowmena upped the tempo and Ciaran Bonner saw a free kick well saved by Philip Doherty. The visitors reduced the deficit on 77 minutes when Bonner pounced on a loose ball inside the area to drill low to the corner from six yards. But the home side sealed the points after Cormac Doherty won possession and fed Doherty who completed his hat trick with a neat finish.
