Gardaí have launched a search for a gang who broke into the former Buncrana leisure centre and set items on fire.

Fire services were called to the scene on Thursday evening.

Three youths and one adult man were seen in the building at the time. They gained entry by breaking a window on the front door. They then set several items on fire within the pool area.

“The fire was small and did not get out of hand thanks to the fire services who were on hand to extinguish the flames,” gardaí said. The building is said to be extensively damaged by smoke.

The group made their escape via the Aileach Road in the direction of the Railway Road.

Some CCTV has been obtained and is being examined.

A garda spokesperson said: “We appeal to anybody who travelled in the areas of the Shore Road, Aileach Road or the Railway Road between 6pm and 6.30pm and who had a dash cam to make the footage available to Gardaí.

“If anybody observed these males on foot we ask them to make contact with Gardaí in Buncrana also on 074-9320540.”
