Long-awaited works to make several pedestrian crossings in the centre of Ballybofey safer are set to begin imminently.
Confirmation of the beginning of the works was given at this week’s Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District meeting.
A number of measures are to be installed in the coming days and weeks, with funding in place to develop longer-term solutions.
The installation of new signage alerting motorists of the crossings, a re-painting of the road markings at the crossings, as well as installing improved lighting at the crossing points are all works that will be completed in the coming weeks as short-term measures.
In the longer term, provisional plans include installing raised crossings to help road users to be more aware of the crossing points, further signage and lighting installations, as well as moving the pedestrian crossing at the corner on the top of the main street, at the Bank of Ireland branch, to a more suitable location.
Local Councillor Patrick McGowan says these changes are necessary for all road users passing through the Twin Towns.
“I was driving there last night and often my heart is in my mouth, especially on a dark evening you have to watch like a hawk – even with these crossings people are walking across the road anywhere and everywhere, so there needs to be more awareness of these crossings.”
“This is good news for pedestrians, for shoppers and for drivers.”
Cllr McGowan continued; “There will also be public consultation on the long-term measures unlike the last time (when the crossings were installed). The Council will be asking local people and local businesses their views.”
“My expectation is that the full works will be finished before 2025.”
