Plans are in place to twin Lifford with a Spanish town that has historic links to Red Hugh O’Donnell.
The proposed twinning would see Lifford paired with the town of Simancas.
Simancas is where Red Hugh O’Donnell passed away in 1602, with his burial being in the nearby city of Valladolid.
Both locations host yearly celebrations of Red Hugh, with statues commemorating him located both in Lifford and Simancas.
The twinning of Lifford and Simancas was discussed at this week’s Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District Council meeting.
Lifford-Stranorlar MD Councillors unanimously decided to approve the twinning, as has the local Council in Simancas.
The twinning proposal will now be voted on at an upcoming full meeting of Donegal County Council, where it is expected to be passed.
