Sinn Féin president Mary Lou MacDonald visited the ‘condemned’ Raphoe Community Playgroup at the weeknd.
The group was informed last week its purpose built facility will have to be demolished due to a defective block issue and is now seeking to raise €1 million for a new building.
The party leader met with local election candidates Maria Doherty in Downings, Ulick Hughes and Sandra Haughey in Letterkenny and Tony McDaid in Raphoe.
“We met with staff and parents of the Raphoe Community Playgroup and found the situation they find themselves in to be totally unacceptable,” Deputy Pearse Doherty said.
“This is a building that the community fundraised to build in 2000. Now it has been condemned through no fault of their own. They must leave in June and, so far, there has been no response from government. This isn’t good enough.”
Deputy Doherty said both himself and Ms McDonald have pledged to continue to raise the issue with the government.
“Communities cannot be abandoned in this way.”
