A total of 13 drivers were arrested in Donegal across the Bank Holiday weekend for driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
Figures released by local Gardai say a number of other people were also dealt with for a number of other offences.
These included speeding, no tax, no insurance, bald tyres and having no NCT while a disqualified driver was arrested and altered/forged insurance documents were also seized.
The enforcement operation took place over the Bank Holiday weekend commencing at 7am on Thursday the 28th of March and concluding at 7am this morning, Tuesday the 2nd of April.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed “Fixed Charge penalty Notices have been issued for various offences and a number of vehicles were seized. A large range of road traffic offences were detected over the course of the weekend.
“There were 6 drink driving related arrests and 7 drug driving related arrests across the Division between Thursday morning and this morning.
“Detections were made in relation to speeding, no tax, no insurance, bald tyres, no NCT, a disqualified driver was arrested and altered/forged insurance documents were seized.”
Gardai say the aim of this campaign was the protection of vulnerable road users, and the reduction in fatal and serious collisions through high-visibility roads policing and strict enforcement.
The spokesperson added “Thankfully we did not have any fatal road traffic collisions in the Donegal Division over the course of the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend but given the amount of detections in relation to a range of road traffic offences it is obvious that the road safety message is just not hitting home with some people.
“A total of 13 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs is a worrying figure. Even one arrest for driving under the influence is one too high.
“We continue to appeal to all drivers to slow down, to drive with care and never to drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.”
