Donegal County Council has hit out after a large amount of agricultural waste was dumped near Lough Derg.
The waste (pictured above) was found dumped close to a forest which clearly asked people not to dump in the area.
Even more concerning was the contents of the waste which included sheep drench.
A spokesperson for the council warned even a small amount of this chemical could have disastrous consequences for the local environment.
The spokesperson said “The waste contained sheep drench containers which, while empty on this occasion, could be very harmful if even a small drop made its way into a watercourse.”
The council spokesperson pleaded with people to dispose of agricultural in a safe and efficient manner.
“According to the EPA Good Practice Guide for the disposal of pesticide containers, empty containers should be triple-rinsed, punctured and placed in Farm Plastic recycling bags available from your local co-op or agri-merchant.
“These filled bags should then be brought to your local authorised bring centre. The location and dates of the bring centres are available on the Farm Plastics Recycling website: www.farmplastics.ie.”
