The local community in Rathmullan has been left shocked after the closure of their local Post Office.
The Post Office shut its doors in the town for the last time yesterday, with all services being moved to the Ramelton Post Office.
A fixture in the town for 53 years, opening its doors in February of 1971, its closure comes as owners and operators Bernie and John Kelly are retiring.
Local Councillor Pauric McGarvey paid tribute to the couple, as well as fellow Post Office worker for every one of those 53 years, Angela Crerand.
“Yesterday was a very sad day for Rathmullan, but I want to join everyone in paying tribute to Bernie, John, and Angela.”
“I want to wish John and Bernie all the best on their retirement, and also recognise Angela for her 53 years of service to the town also.”
According to Councillor McGarvey, there is still the possibility that the Post Office could re-open in the town again, should a suitable owner and building be found.
“Speaking to An Post, (they say) the opportunity to take it over is still there, and they don’t want to see it closing.”
