Maria Walsh: A strong voice for the West and for Donegal

Maria Walsh MEP says she has the experience and knowledge to get things done.

And she has plans to do a lot more.

Maria, born in Boston and raised in Mayo, is the youngest serving Irish MEP and brings her energy and lived experience as a young person to the table.

Throughout her time in Brussels, Maria has been a strong voice for the West of Ireland and for Donegal, at a time when it is crucial that the West is represented in Europe. Maria has fought hard for 100% redress for mica and pyrite affected homeowners, as well as for the Donegal fishing industry. Maria represents small family farmers; rural towns and villages; and crucially, young people and the next generation.

Maria started off with a career in television production and creative management, working in Dublin, New York and Philadelphia. She rose to national attention when she won the International Rose of Tralee in 2014, becoming the first openly gay woman to do so.

While Maria’s journey into politics was not a traditional one, her decision to run for the European Parliament followed her life-long commitment to social activism and community service. She was successful on her first attempt to become an MEP in 2019, and since then she has delivered for the people of the Midlands North-West constituency in Europe.

Maria is standing for election as an experienced candidate with a strong track record. If re-elected, she will waste no time in learning the ropes and will hit the ground running. Having served five years in the European Parliament, she has the experience and knowledge needed to actually get things done. She has written legislation, negotiated key agreements and lobbied in Ireland’s interests.

Outside of work, Maria is an avid supporter of Mayo GAA. She is a life-long Pioneer. When she’s not in Brussels or driving the length and breadth of the 15 county constituency, Maria can be found working on her family farm at home in Shrule. She graduated with a Masters in Agricultural Extension & Innovation from the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science in December 2023.
