An investigation is ongoing into a ‘significant’ fish kill which occurred on a tributary of the River Finn.

The incident, which was discovered at the weekend, took place on a stream between Killygordon and Stranorlar.

The Finn is considered to be one of the best wild salmon fishing rivers in Europe. However, it is not yet known if it has been affected by the latest incident.

The Loughs Agency confirmed to Donegal Daily it is investigating the matter.

“Loughs Agency has been investigating a significant fish kill incident on a tributary of the River Finn near Killygordon,” CEO Sharon McMahon said.

“Whilst we have been unable to retrieve all dead fish at this stage, the total number of mortalities is estimated at over 300, including brown trout, juvenile brown trout, stone loach, eel and sticklebacks.

“The source of the pollution that caused this fish kill remains unknown and inspections are ongoing. Loughs Agency will concentrate pollution duties in this area and continue to monitor the situation.”
