Warning after ‘substantial’ theft of tools from van in Ballybofey

Gardaí have urged tradespeople to exercise vigilance after thousands of euro worth of tools were stolen from a parked van in east Donegal.

A ‘substantial amount’ of tools were taken from a red Vauxhall van that had been parked at Navenny Street, Ballybofey, (on left hand side of road past the Finn Harps pitch heading for Dreenan). The incident occurred on Saturday, May 25, between 4.30pm and 9pm.

The items stolen included two Hilti drills, two cordless Hilti circle saws, two Hilti angle grinders, a cordless quick cut saw, two Hilti impact guns and two Hilti screw guns.

“We appeal to anybody who may have seen any suspicious activity in that area between those times to make contact with us,” Garda Niall Maguire.

“Should anybody come across these types of tools for sale on a second hand basis then we also ask them to make contact with Gardaí.”

Letterkenny Gardaí may be contacted on 074-9167100 and The Garda Confidential line may also be contacted on 1800 666 111.

“We would like to remind the public, especially tradespeople, to be security conscious when parking their cars/vans,” Garda Maguire added.

“Ensure that your vehicle is locked, alarmed and parked safely in a well lit up area. Don’t store valuables in your car, but if you have to, keep them out of sight.”

Sometimes, he added, it is impractical to remove tools and equipment from vehicles. In these cases, owners should take extra steps to ensure the safety of their property:

  • Additional locking mechanisms should be fitted to vehicles
  • Consider a monitored vehicle alarm and tracking devices for valuable property.
  • Mark and photograph the property and take a record of serial numbers, makes & models.
  • Download the An Garda Síochána Property App. It will give you the facility to record the unique information associated with your property.

Park your vehicle within CCTV view if you have a CCTV system at your home/premises and store your car keys away from windows and letterboxes.

Always report any suspicious activity to Gardaí immediately.
