The scoreline didn’t reflect the flow of the game. Kilmacrennan dominated for long spells but just couldn’t get any real clear chances. Hayley Callaghan Carter and Jorgi Mae Mc Groarty controlled the midfield for long periods. Gweedore United 3 – 1 Illistin
This game played in at Pobalscoil Gaoth Dobhair saw Gweedore United collect all three points against a strong Illistrin team in the first round of Series 2 fixtures at Under 16 level. Gweedore playing against the breeze in the first half took the lead in the 10th minute when Lilly Rodgers scored for the home side to give them an early lead. Both teams played some nice football after this and it was Illistrin FC who got the second goal of the game when the Meave Brady finished well after a goal mouth scramble to bring the away side level. 1-1 Half Time. In the second half Gweedore with the aid of the breeze pushed for the next goal and were rewarded in the 65th minute when Ciara McFadden laid the ball back to Brianna Ferry who hit a magnificent shot from 25 yards past the Illistrin keeper leaving her with no chance to put the home side in front. Illistrin were dangerous on the break with the dangerous Aoise Lenihan and Sophie McLaughlin an ever-present threat but the Gweedore defence was excellently marshalled by Eva Diver alongside Hannah McFadden, Katelyn McFadden and
Emma McCool kept the home side in the lead with some excellent displays. Gweedore got the third and decisive goal in the 75th Minute when a free kick from Brianna Ferry was parried by the Illistrin Keeper and Ciara McFadden reacted quickest and squared to Neasa Diver who finished well to secure the three points for the home side. Some excellent football played by both sides on the night in tough conditions with the strong breeze. Aoise Lenihan, Meave Brady and Sophie McLaughlin excelled for the away side. It was a brilliant display from a young Gweedore United side with Hannah McFadden, Lilly Rodgers and Aoibhin Cassidy having excellent displays. Referee Seamie Ferry had a good game in the middle also.
Group 2
Lagan Harps 2 – 3 Letterkenny Rovers
Lagan suffered heartbreak at the end after a heroic effort with ten players. With a few late withdrawals they were left short from the start. The girls battled from the start as Letterkenny attacked with the breeze. They finally broke through on twenty-eight minutes when Savannah Keys turned a couple of defenders and finished well. Lagan refused to quit and Claragh Gallagher cut in from the right to finish well. Letterkenny pressed hard at the start of the half, and we were forced to dig in with Cara Mc Fadden and Saoirse McBride excellent at the centre of Lagans defence. Siobhan Curran and Sinead Mc Loughlin really battled in midfield as the half wore on. Ciara Cullen dealt with anything that came through. Letterkenny were doing most of the attacking, but Lagan had some great counters with Teaghan Doherty combining well with Claragh Gallagher down the right. From one of these Claragh crossed with Mikaela Breen just failing to get the finishing touch at the back post. Letterkenny then grabbed a second with a good long-range effort from Aisling McGinley. Letterkenny were then reduced to ten when they suffered an injury. Lagan looked like they earned a draw when we won a short kick out and Sinead found Claragh who finished well. However straight from the kick-off Letterkenny won a penalty and Savannah Keys kept her cool to convert. It was so harsh on the Lagan girls with all ten showing great fight throughout. Claragh Gallagher was outstanding going forward for Lagan. Aisling McGinley and Savannah Keys stood out for Letterkenny.
Cappry Rovers 0 – 4 Keadue Rovers
