Gardaí are urging people to think twice about the dangers and consequences of illegal fireworks this Halloween.

It comes amid reports of fireworks being set off in different locations in Donegal in recent days.

Yesterday, Donegal Daily received reports of fireworks being set off in a Letterkenny residential area as early as 6am.

“We want to urge anyone who is thinking about buying or using fireworks this Halloween or in the weeks leading up to it to have a rethink,” said Garda Niall Maguire in a community appeal today.

“So many horrific life changing injuries are sustained at Halloween and during the run up to it every year by fireworks.

“Fireworks are not only dangerous but there are severe criminal penalties for anyone who is found guilty of the offence of igniting an illegal firework, throwing an ignited firework at a person or property or possession of illegal fireworks for sale or supply. The penalties are fines of up to €10,000 and 5 years imprisonment.”

Garda Maguire urged people to “please act responsibly and alert Gardaí if you come across the use of or the sale of fireworks.”
