Driver caught under influence of cocaine in Letterkenny

A driver was arrested in Letterkenny yesterday on suspicion of drug driving after they tested positive for cocaine.

Gardaí also seized the car as it did not have a valid NCT.

The Bank Holiday road traffic enforcement has begun across the county ahead of a busy weekend.

Another incident yesterday saw Donegal Town Roads Policing Unit discovering a car with two tires that were defective/badly worn. The driver was escorted to a nearby tyre centre to rectify the matter and Fixed Charge Penalty Notices will be issued.

“Gardaí will be out on the roads this weekend conducting speed checks and high visibility checkpoints. Make road safety a priority this weekend and always to help save lives,” a spokesperson said.

Fifteen people have been killed on Donegal’s roads so far this year, compared to ten for all of last year. The month between August 19 and September 18 was particularly bleak, with a total of six people having lost their lives in the county.

As we enter the Bank Holiday Weekend, gardaí urge all road users to act responsibly:
  • Slow Down.
  • Wear a seatbelt.
  • Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Do not use/hold a mobile phone while driving.
  • Pedestrians/cyclists should wear high visibility gear to ensure that they can be seen clearly.
