Notorious Letterkenny teen with almost 90 convictions jailed for theft from car

A Letterkenny teenager with almost 90 previous convictions has been jailed for the theft of a key fob from a vehicle.

Sam Orr was sentenced to five months in prison when he was brought before Letterkenny District Court.

The 19-year-old is currently in custody in Castlerea Prison and is due to be released in October.

Orr was brought to court by prison officers.

Garda Rachel Keane gave evidence of charging Orr at Letterkenny courthouse in relation to the incident on December 1, 2024 at Cheshire Apartments Long Lane, Letterkenny.

Two days after the incident, the owner went to her vehicle and realised that the key fob was removed. CCTV was harvested and Orr was identified. He could be seen opening the vehicle, taking the fob from it and leaving the scene. The car key fob was worth €375, the court was told.

Orr spoke only to confirm that he wished for the matter to be dealt with in the District Court and to plead guilty.

His solicitor, Mr Rory O’Brien, said Orr has been in custody now for a “considerable period”. He said the court was familiar with his client.

Mr O’Brien told the court that Orr intends to pursue employment following his release.

“I don’t know what the future holds in this area,” Mr O’Brien said. “His record speaks for itself and his notoriety speaks for itself.”

Sergeant Collins informed the court that Orr has 87 previous convictions.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham convicted Orr and sentenced him to five months in prison.

A charge of the unauthorised interference with mechanism of vehicle, contrary to section 113 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, was struck out in light of Orr’s plea to the theft charge.
