Deputy Charles Ward has urged the Minister for Housing, James Browne, to “call the housing and homelessness crisis what it is: a national emergency”.
The 100% Redress Party TD pointed out that the number of people experiencing homelessness in Ireland has increased by 80% in three years. According to Census 2022, the largest age group among the homeless population was 0–4 year olds, accounting for 11.4% of the total homeless population.
As of April, there were 54 homeless people in Donegal.
Deputy Ward was speaking in the Dáil Chamber when he said: “This crisis has been going on for over a decade now. Over ten years of lack of housing, rising rents, crumbling homes and increased homelessness.”
He added: “In Donegal, these numbers will only continue to rise as many families impacted by the defective concrete crisis face potential homelessness. It is clear from these figures that the government is failing.”
