Donegal’s own Altan are marking an incredible 40 years of touring this year with two intimate local shows.
The legendary Celtic band have graced some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and Dublin’s National Concert Hall. They’ve even brought their native music to the iconic Glastonbury Festival.
This summer, they’ll be playing two special concerts: on 11th July at Early’s Bar Arranmore, and on 13th July, the Concert of the Greats at The Marquee, Bruckless.
Altan has long been at the forefront of traditional Irish music, blending the raw energy of their native Donegal-fiddle style with a rare, melodic sensibility.
All these years later, lead singer and fiddler, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, says the energy is still gained from the crowds in front of them each night.
“Altan have a very loyal following which is truly amazing,” Mairéad tells Donegal Daily.
“When playing live we get so much energy and encouragement from our fans and friends. This is truly inspiring as we feel that they really understand what we are about.”
Altan
In 1995 Altan became the first-ever Irish traditional band signed to a major record label, Virgin Records. At the time, The Boston Globe named them “the hottest group in the Celtic realm”.
Altan has shared their music and musicianship with The Chieftains, Dolly Parton, Ricky Skaggs, John Prine, and more. Embarking on their fifth decade, their commitment to Donegal’s musical heritage ensures that it will endure for generations to come.
The band’s original members, lead singer and fiddler, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Ciaran Curran on bouzouki and Mark Kelly on guitar are accompanied by accordion player Martin Tourish, and their newest member, fiddler and singer, Clare Friel.
“I’m really very happy that Altan are still relevant after 40 years,” says Mairéad.
“Longevity is a difficult to achieve in the music business and I’m proud of what we have achieved so far and really feel we have so much more to give.
“We are looking forward to playing as a band for as long as possible!”
